I have come for relief from this pain
I can no longer stand
How long have you borne it
Were you born with it?
Vaguely to me it seems
There was a time before
And you did not come to me sooner because...
Then I was less weak
And pain felt slight and muted
And seemed to subside
If I did this or that or an aspirin
But pain did not stop there
As my days progressed pain the shadow grew
What followed then
I became numb
I blamed myself
My habits the things I did and did not do
And I postponed seeing you
And work and play
And wallet got in the way
And now I fear
There is no cure
But I am here
I may not do as you will say
But Doctor please give it a name
And I will pay
Fill in this form
And take this test
We will see how much you weigh
And I will do my best
Does it hurt when I do this
I can give you things we can't pronounce
If we could read Rx anyway
Our time is up
Please see the nurse
I will see you another day
And God will find a way.

H.G. Wells Dream
Having fallen asleep in the late afternoon today, I awoke recalling another reading dream, this time of having read a part of a book about a mariner who was involved in the taking of another ship at sea. It was written in a style which seemed somewhat archaic, and certainly not a style my own. I recall mention of two publishing company names, H.G. Publishing and Wells Publishing. I woke up and went to wikipedia to see if I could determine if H.G. Wells had ever had a publishing company by either of those names, or ever written a story, fictional or no, of a sailor in a hostile takeover of another vessel. I could not at first reading confirm either of these possibilities.

Using time and income percentage charts to plan for future business development
How are you spending your time in your business-working day? How much of your total income are you earning from each of your different streams of income? How much of your total income do you want to be earning from each stream of income next year? These are some of the questions I ask my website clients to help them get a better sense of their dreams and visions, and to help them manifest their dreams and visions, especially in their website design.
I draw four circles, “pie charts”, and ask them to fill in the “wedges”. I suggest that these “pie charts” may also be helpful for you to manifest your dreams and visions. Draw four circles (“pies”) for your business. The first chart represents the hours of your working day. Draw wedges for the percentage of time you spend working on each of your streams of income, each product or service you provide. Now, in the second circle, draw the chart of your working day a year from now as you envision it. How much time do you want to be spending on each segment of your business?
The next two circles represent money. In the third chart, draw wedges to represent what percentage of income you derive from each stream of income. Now, in the fourth circle, draw your ideal percentages, what you would like to accomplish a year from now.
For example, you may be spending ¾ of your time providing products, and ¼ providing services. You may discover that your income derives ¾ from services, and ¼ from products. The results may surprise you when you look at them in this way. Now consider your charts for how you want to be spending your time and earning your income a year from now. You will see that if you hope to derive 90% of your income from products a year from now, for example, you need to shift now how much time you are investing in that stream of income.

I see my life now
As a waterway
Partially and somewhat badly charted
Sometimes seemingly vast
Other times apparently constricted
Am I carried by the current
Do I struggle to make headway
Only rarely have I climbed
To headlands where the view reveals
I do not know how deep
I do not know where I am going
Often I have met fellow travelers
Often they have muddied my waters
Poisoned even
Tiny actions stir ripples into infinity
Rarely on occasion
The sirens have sung sweetly
Have lured me to a place of serenity
A few crucial mentors have cast in their pebbles
Their influence has calmed the waters in perpetuity
They will always be remembered
Though they may know it never
I am ever grateful
Their influence has given meaning
Given order and mapped a path
Through rapids
To pools of calm

You will be storing your vital personal and business-financial information on the web and possibly others’ data as well; it is vital to manage this vital and sensitive information effectively, so here are a few tips on password data; How to and not to: store, choose, use, transmit, share, change, and destroy passwords and other vital computer data.
Store
• Create a file to collect passwords and to cut-and-paste from, but do NOT title it “passwords”.
• Dedicate a binder to vital computer data, but again, label the binder something other than “passwords”.
Choose effective-secure passwords
• Do not use a password more than once.
• Do not use a dictionary word.
• Use at least six characters.
• Use a random combination of upper and lower case characters, both alphabetical and numbers.
• Avoid using characters that are hard to distinguish, namely, “l” (lower case L) & “1”, and “O” (zero) & “0” (upper case “o”).
• Use a password generator:
https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm
Each time anyone views this page, it generates truly random strings of characters. Choose a set at least 6 characters that that you like, preferably one relatively easy to remember or type.
• Use that’s hard to remember, with a way to remember it.
One good way to do this is to think of a book title, such as “The 5 Merry Fisher-men, by Henry Humboldt”. Your password might be t5MFmbHH. It’s not quite “random,” but it is (relatively) secure.
• If you will be taking orders by credit card on the web, your exposure and liability is vast and could be expensive; you will want to learn more and take every precaution, including, possibly, getting insurance and legal advice. (This is not legal advice!)
Transmit and share
• Do not transmit your passwords online.
• Do not share your password.
• Especially, do not share a password between more than one secure, vital financial or email account and any other.
• If necessary to share a password between you and your webmaster, administrator, programmer, or client, give this information by voice, face to face, on the phone, or in writing only, not by e-mail.
Change
• Change your passwords at least annually, all at a set, calendared date, such as new years.
• Change your passwords when the person you have shared them with is done.
Use
• Do not use your passwords on a public computer or in an unsecured wireless hot-spot such as an internet cafĂ©.
Destroy
• Keep all sensitive data in one electronic file and one print file per person. You may want to keep an additional set off-site, away from the office, at home; or, if you work at home, consider having a ‘back-up person’ who will keep an extra copy of your personal and / or business data secure off-site.
• Shred print data when it is no longer useful.
• Overwriting old data, then deleting it, may be more effective than ‘just deleting’ it for most people, since ‘deleted’ data is often retrievable by experts unless the entire hard drive itself has actually been re-written.
• Do not throw away or give away old computers (i.e., hard drives) unless an expert makes certain that all the data is destroyed.

Why does my YouTube look blurry?
There are at least two reasons:
1. Click the little rectangle icon on the bottom right of the YouTube window, and the video resizes; it looks sharper in the smaller version.
2. YouTube streams huge amount of video data. One way they can do that is to compress the data.
What kind of video do I need for YouTube?
YouTube accepts files up to 10 minutes long in a variety of formats. They prefer to receive Apple Quicktime .mov files. For posting longer videos, option include Google. (This is true even though Google owns YouTube as of this writing, August 2007.)
What are all these video formats?
Windows has a video viewer built in, Windows Media Viewer, which uses .wmv files. Apple’s Quicktime also works on PCs. To download Quicktime free, go to Apple.com and click on downloads. There are several other formats, including Flash, .mpeg, and MP4. (Before downloading software, you may want to set a restore point. See: Essential Security Steps.)
Hi-Definition: Who can see it?!
You’ll need to view the video from a DVD on a Hi-Def TV to see all the glorious detail. Otherwise, unless you’re in a theater, or watching Hi-Def TV filmed and produced in Hi-Def (such as NFL and National Geographic Channel) and then broadcast from a Hi-Def Tower to a Hi-Def antennae (in a major metropolitan area), you’re not seeing Hi-Def. Typical computer monitors don’t display Hi-Def.
What do I do with my video once it’s on YouTube?
Promote it! Tell people about it, link to it from or embed it into your website, develop a YouTube account, post it at other video sharing sites, such as Revver, and Livelink. You may want to submit your video (on CD) to your local community access cable TV station. Make copies of your DVD and give them away and / or sell them!
How can I see my film?
Go to
http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=heliad&p=r
What do I do when I get my CD?
View it on a computer using Quicktime. When you insert the CD, Windows should automatically open a dialogue asking what you want to do. Select “View in folders”. You should see now 2 files (at least). They are the same video in two different formats. If you have Quicktime installed already, you’ll see the Quicktime .mov file as an icon with a blue “Q” and the word “movie”. (If you have difficulty, go to Apple.com and download the newest version.) Windows PC users doubleclick on the .wmv file.
If you have asked to approve your video, then please do so promptly. If you need any changes made, be sure to email me the specifics. It is vital to post videos as soon as possible.
I may also send you a final version of your video on DVD in Hi-Def, for viewing in a DVD player on Hi-def and standard TV’s.
Please subscribe to my YouTube channel!
Ask yourself continually: What is my heart’s desire? What is my goal, objective? What are my dreams and visions? What do I want to accomplish? Where do I want to be in 5 years? Ten years? These desires, by whatever name, must be acted upon. These millions of small words and deeds must are the tactics that require a coordinated, orchestrated strategy. How unlikely are our dreams and visions to come true without a thoroughly-conceived and deliberate schedule of planned actions. Some people are visionaries, masters of dreams and visions. Other people are masters of the details. Few people are capable of effectively combining and bridging this polarity, but that ability to bridge is vital and urgent to the accomplishments to the achievement of not just a better reality, but a wholly transformed reality. One cannot really master either polarity without being a master of both, and we must strive continually to strengthen our weaknesses, toward a multi-dimensional equilibrium. This transformed state of balanced thinking and acting means an enlightened state of action-planning and planning-action.

knitting with old hands
My hands are old
My eyesight is poor
My eyes see differently from any other eyes.
I am knitting as I sit
And talk with friends.
Each stitch is a prayer
I am knitting an afghan for someone I love.
As I knit
I ask my friends to help choose the colors.
Each person is a thread in the afghan of my life
I am knitting with old hands
New afghans.
I am beginning to see
Others can learn
Can see anew
By looking through these, my old eyes

InterNIC—Public Information Regarding Internet Domain Name Registration Services
http://www.internic.net/There's only one good, official place to check to see if a domain name is available, and that is:
http://www.internic.net/whois.html
?Why?
Because, if you type a name directly into the address bar, and it comes back "404 --Not Found", that only tells you that it's not being hosted, it doesn't tell you whether someone already has the name, but NOT hosted.
AND, worse, I have heard instances (and unfortunately, this is all too common), when someone 'checks' a name at a third-party website, and then, before you know it, someone else has already snapped it up... apparently because the site is not secure, and unethical parties are watching it to see what names might be queried, and then buying and 'cyber-squatting', speculating that they can resell the names at a profit.
For more info on choosing a domain name, see the brief articles I wrote for my clients at :

Designing Websites: Web Browsers’ compatibility and incompatibility
You should be aware that the question of how things look in various browsers is a real minefield.
To wit: One must make certain choices which have certain consequences, there is no 'standard'. The strength of the web is that it's like wine that takes the shape of whatever 'glass' (platform: mac/pc & browser) into which it's poured. Always trade-offs. Certainly no point in trying to get them to look the same. Nobody really is looking at them both / all.
Not only that, but Internet Explorer by Microsoft doesn't really work quite right with the Microsoft Word 'save as html' function. AND, different versions of each browser behave differently.
So, aside from tearing out their hair, web designers generally shoot for a compromise between cost and 'agap' (as good as possible).
Chet is telling me that he's going to base his work on the version of Internet Explorer he's using, which is version 6. This is why you often will see websites that specify "Best viewed in xyz browser version #z".
May I suggest that either you keep using IE6, if that's what you're using, or, make sure you've updated your browser(s) to the latest version, AND please tell me-us:
? What browser versions are you using?
(Check your browser version under HELP...ABOUT.)

What To Do Now That Your Writing Has Been Proofread (& Possibly Edited)
If you are having you documents proofread you may find this set of instructions useful.
It is important to distinguish a “light” proofreading from a thorough editing and re-write. Generally I read a manuscript in at least 3 steps: first, I read “to receive”, uncritically, what the author is trying to say. Then I read to correct the obvious. Then I reread to look for “what’s missing,” and larger issues of structure and audience. In other words, I do the ‘easy’ work first.
Standard proofreader’s marks can be found here:
http://www.merriam-webster.com/mw/table/proofrea.htm
My marks fall into several categories. The majority will be obvious typos, spelling corrections, scanning artifacts, etc. Other marks will fall into the realm of ‘editorial license’, e.g., optional commas or inserting a period (.) or semicolon. Another type of mark will be a simple question mark (?) meaning that I don’t understand the sentence or the word.
You may want to make the edit inputs yourself; or you may mark the edits you approve, and allow me to make the edit inputs.
I suggest that you go thru the manuscript with three colors of high-lighters: use green for the edits you agree (or input); red for those you disagree (i.e., leave as-is), and yellow for the few you might want to discuss further.
Use “search and replace” in the correct sequence
If you want to make the edit inputs yourself, be sure to use search and replace. In MSWord (PC) these commands are available in the edit menu. Use search and replace for changes throughout the entire document, such as replacing two spaces with one space (repeat as necessary!), and changing a double-dash (--) into an em-dash (–) You can be sure to add leading and trailing spaces first, before replacing all double spaces with single spaces. Be sure to save a copy of your document especially before you do a global search-and-replace in case it has unexpected consequences (ctrl-Z “undo” works, too). You may type directly into the “search” and “replace with” boxes, but sometimes it’s easier to paste from the document. Some special characters are available, such as “^p” for “paragraph break” and “^s” for “space”. If the document has been improperly formatted to begin with, e.g., using spaces instead of indents or tabs, then you may need to proceed cautiously, and / or do reformatting.
In any case, ideally someone should then check to confirm the edits were done correctly and no new errors were introduced.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call me.

Professor E.,
My map activities are more like games and puzzles, for example, the "Map Scavenger Hunt," where students-others look for specific items (symbols, etc.) on the collection of maps, and then may answer questions, fill in the blanks, unscramble the answer to a final question etc. I usually put them together according to a specific theme, e.g. rivers, Native Americans, Spanish language and culture, rivers, etc. I will post an example of those.
This is an old lesson plan that I did NOT prepare: I may have sent you a link to multiple webpages, but this is a 20-page Adobe .pdf document, maybe more convenient. Contact me for full-resolution images.

Dear Roget,
Thank you for your profound contribution to human knowledge. Regrettably, too few people use the Thesaurus, and even fewer use it to the smallest fraction of its potential. The Thesaurus is as important an aide to learning a language as is a dictionary, especially learning a second language. For years, Robert J. Ross has been teaching English as a second language, and in 1995 he published Thinking in English (TIE)
http://ashlandcreativeoutlet.com/harmoniccode
an exercise book for Chinese speakers, based on Roget’s Thesaurus.
Using the Thesaurus and the TIE book, students learn subtleties of the English language that are impossible without the Thesaurus exercises. Students learn word relationships, such as synonyms, homonyms, and homophones; words that are unique in English and words unique in their native language; connotation, etymology and word forms (noun, verb, tense, and adjective forms) of single words; words for things and their attributes (e.g., sea, salt, water…); and tools and their actions-functions (e.g., saw, cut).
A relatively brief guide to word choice, and to Roget’s Thesaurus, would spur a new flurry of adjunct sales.
The Thesaurus Guide would be a product readily localizable for languages other than English, however, it would be supremely useful also to native speakers of English around the world. Reprinting and reformatting Robert J. Ross’ Teach in English would make English speakers want editions and Thesauri for the languages they are learning. I wish I had the equivalent book for Russian; I’ll have to write it myself.
Robert recommends these books, which I’ll review shortly:
Walk, Amble, Stroll: Vocabulary Building Through Domains (Level 1) by Kathryn Trump, Sherry Trechter, and Dee Ann Holisky (Paperback - Mar 8, 1995)
Spanish for Reading: A Self-Instructional Course by Fabiola Franco and Karl C. Sandberg (Paperback - Mar 1, 1998)

Abstract: Suggests promoting WNRF and spiritual fiction by instigating a Kindle (electronic book) be sent to the International Space Station, and other related parties.
I suggest that Amazon donate 4 (or 5) of the devices, all identically loaded up with the astronauts’ and cosmonauts’ favorite books.
? What are the astronauts’ and cosmonauts’ favorite books?
I could begin making a list, and contacting astronauts whose reading favorites are not already public record.
Two would go into space, one to stay, and one to return, autographed by the astronauts and cosmonauts, to be auctioned off, with the proceeds to benefit Space Academy.
One Kindle would reside at the Space Academy.
Another would be donated to the Smithsonian Institution, to be placed either in the Air and Science Museum, or in the Publishing Technology exhibit.
One of the Kindle’s would go to WNRF-us-me for publicity, to manage for public relations-events and marketing purposes, a kind of traveling exhibition.
IONS, astronaut Edgar Mitchell’s Institute of Noetic Sciences, is a publisher and he-they would doubtless be interested in such a project.
Amazon’s Jeff Bezos would get product placement that is literally ‘out of this world’.
NASA may be interested in publishing a book based on this idea.

Additive Media Model
PhD-26jan08-7th
© DanShaw.com
Abstract: Explication each sensory stimulus of communication, singly and agglutinatively, gives several geometric impressions and avenues for further development of new models.
Starting from Storytelling
For some time I have been considering building up a model of media from the spoken word, story-telling around a fire, the primal form of communication. As we add on technologies, including actors, costumes, sets, sound effects, lighting, camera, etc., certain possibilities increase. I have often thought this “additive” process would make an interesting basis for a presentation, a sort of “Broadway show” beginning with a storyteller, then adding in elements singly.
? What would be the sequence of such an additive process?
The Five-fold Sensorial Model
Considering all the five senses in such a process, the chart become multivariate and highly complex. One could alternatively begin with a film, and reduce elements, creating a subtractive theory. This would give us one axis of a multidimensional concept,
silence – Sound
dark (shadow) - Light
Black & white – color
Stillness – motion
Actors – animation
Post-production
Metadata
Subtitles
Language tracks
Commentary
Along the other axis of the matrix we now have various media and “formats”:
Face to face silent & stillness
Face to face sound & still (or dark, no visual cues)
Face to face sound and motion
Etc.
In the intersections of the stimulus column with the media column, we see how different channels of communication and media compare relative to their synesthetic and full-kinesthetic content.
Like electricity, it may geometrically spawn many new innovations, but by definition, a new technology does just one new thing. That new thing may be telephone (voice only) or “movies” (light-motion only) until they converge, e.g. as “talkies”.
Now we can see that various technologies are highly constrained to just one channel of communication, e.g., vocal for phones, verbal for text messages, etc. In other words, communication technologies and technologies in general are naturally somewhat frustrating.
? What would be a multiplicative model of communication?
Another possible chart might start: [Stimulus – perception]

It is simple to construct pairs of antonyms along an ‘axis of subtlety’ where one side is the positive aspect, e.g., thrift, and the other, the negative aspect, e.g., “spendthrift,” “tight-wad,” “scrooge,” etc. Along the plane of symmetry, one posits the neutral word and aspect , e.g., “relation to money.” One might then posit another ‘axis’ along which the variable is things other than money, say relationship to plants, animals, people, places, ideas, etc. Now we have a three dimensional plane of relationships between words, ideas, levels of subtlety, and contexts. There are also multidimensional models, perhaps I will go into this further next in my post on
The Additive Model of Social Interactions

Theology of Mathematics: Defining & Popularizing a ‘New’ Focus of Research

Abstract: Requests lists of axioms and resources; suggests wiki.
Apparently the phrase “theology of mathematics” was coined by Dr. Richard S. Kirby, and inspired at least in part by Stuart C. Dodd. In my understanding, the phrase encompasses applying mathematical principles to the study of ethics. One example would be 13 = 1, implying that when we ‘multiply’ our small individual selves, we create the greater one, the All One, the divine.
I suggest that we-you create a wikipedia listing for his topic, and create a list of axioms, explanations, etc.

Productizing Your Existing Writings (and music):
Using Dr. Kirby’s work as an example for others

Abstract: Careful assessment required of which existing materials can be most rapidly and profitably produced and marketed.
In previous articles I introduced the 9-Stage Model as it applies to the development of social movements,
http://danshaw.com/9-stage-model.php
based on the work of Richard Moore.
I am adapting that model to communications theory. Like Stuart C. Dodd’s matrix
A Scientific Foundation for World Culture, by Stuart C. Dodd and Burt Webb, Jan 1976

the 9-Stage Model suggests that for effective action, we look up and down the timeline from our standpoint in the infinitesimal now. Specifically, looking at how we (as principals of NAUP &) as writers, and musicians, can “make use of the results” of our previous work. These already (semi-)completed works are the most expedient to bring to market, with the lowest production time and expense, hence the greatest (passive) profit potential.
Old products, new channels
Simply re-formatting old works can create new markets and distribution channels. Can we sell writings, e.g. the sermons, on CD?
Can we market videos?
Downloadable sales
What can we sell as downloadable .pdfs?
DanShaw.com downloadable sales
My website has the capability to sell downloadable files.
First questions
Specifically we need to know: What existing writings-works does RK feel are his best and most marketable?
What needs to be done to produce these?
What needs to be done to market these?
Who are our allies in this project?
Sermons: compiled by year and by theme
By year:
I could do this in a good day’s work, but I am still in the process of reading and editing these. Who (else) can input the edits after Richard approves them?
By theme:
Humbletown and other sermons
This collection of writings would be a great place to start.
Science Fiction shorts
?Which writings are in this category?
Altars of the Future
This topic would particularly easy to market if it were targeted for religious bookstores. I suggest we broaden the appeal by shifting the emphasis somewhat so that it begins with a ‘specialized concordance’ of Biblical references to altars; then put Dr. K’s commentary at the end. This short booklet would be relatively inexpensive to print
? would there be funds for an initial printing (3,000 + / -) and some marketing?
