Your business storefront sign could be 100% better

Some business owners spend thousands of dollars on a sign for their storefront, but most never really think through what makes a sign effective. By following these simple suggestions to design your storefront sign, you will bring in more customers and make more money.

Visible from up and down the road
If your sign is on the front of your building, and your building is close to the street, your sign will not be visible to passing traffic until they are in front of your business, and then only if the driver turns her head to read your sign. Your sign needs to be more or less perpendicular to the roadway, and so will have to be lettered on two sides. Even if your business is one a one-way street, your sign should be double-sided for pedestrians. A sign painted on the building will only be highly visible if your building is set back a good distance from the road. But even then, you should have a sign right up at the roadside. Pedestrians are not likely to wait for the signal to cross a busy street unless they can clearly see your shop sign.

Visible from sufficient distance
Your sign needs to be visible from at least 500 feet away. Especially if traffic is moving at speeds around 55 miles per hour, drivers need plenty of time to slow down safely to pull in to your business. Make sure that your sign is high enough to be seen above cars and trucks, and that it is not blocked by tree branches, etc.

Well lit
Even if your business is shut at night, you want people passing by after dark to see your business. Make sure your sign is well lit. Check frequently to make sure that all the light bulbs are working.

Lettering of sufficient size
To be visible from 500 feet, especially in a fast-moving vehicle, letters need to be 12 inches high, for people with normal vision. As the average age of the population increases, more and more of your customers will have impaired vision, so your sign needs to at least meet these standards, if not exceed them.

High contrast lettering
Use black lettering, or a dark color, against a white or light-colored background. Do not use reverse type, that is, white against a black or dark-colored background. Our eyes have evolved to focus on an object (foreground) against a background. Work with this natural tendency, not against it.

Use plain lettering
Use relatively plain lettering, not fancy lettering such as cursive.

Use all upper case
Upper case letters are learned first, and people can read upper case more easily than lower-case or mixed-case lettering.

Distinguish your business from the competition
You are competing for the attention of customers who have limited time, attention, and money. Fewer shoppers will stop at a store with a sign that says “POTTERY” than at a store with a sign that says “LOCAL HANDMADE POTTERY”.

Be brief
Shorter is better.

Grab attention with something a little unexpected
Do something creative with your signage to capture your customers’ attention and to make it memorable. Nobody remembers the logo for Kaybee Toys, now out of business, but everyone remembers that the “R” in Toys-R-Us is backwards.

Promote your website on your sign
Of the hundreds or thousands of people driving and walking past your sign every day, only a small percentage will stop at your business. Make sure your sign communicates effectively to everyone who passes by. Your website name, the dot-com, is your de facto business name. Promote it.

Create a blog to easily & frequently post new material to the web

By creating a blog at Google’s blogspot, you will be able to easily and frequently post new material to the web. A major advantage to using Google’s blogspot (“blogger”) rather than any other blog is that it seems that your content uploaded to blogspot is nearly instantly indexed for Google search results. By comparison, Google does not instantaneously list new websites, it may take a while until Google’s “bots” crawl through a link to your new site to index it.

To begin, go to:
https://www.blogger.com/start

and click on the orange arrow that says, “Create your blog now.”

Sign up with your email address, and choose a username, and a blog name.
for instructions on choosing a good name, the same basic guidelines apply as when choosing a domain name, which you can see at:
http://danshaw.com/pdfs/web-business-basics-danshaw.pdf:

“You have a name you don’t have to spell, which is about 15 characters or less, without any dashes or underscores, is memorable, describes what you do, and is broad and narrow enough to help your search engine standings”

Choose a password, NOT one that you use for other, more secure sites, such as bank accounts or email.
You can generate a truly random password by going to:
https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

Choose any string of characters from the third row. It’s best to use 7 or more characters.

For more complete info on choosing passwords, read:
Manage Your Passwords Effectively
http://earthgrid.blogspot.com/search?q=password

Once your blog is set up, take a few moments to fill in some information on your profile, especially your website address (URL) if your have one.

Now, to add articles (“posts”) to your blog, click this link:

https://www.blogger.com/start

you may want to type your email address here:
__________________________

select your email address and copy it by holding down the CONTROL ("apple") key and pressing “C”

Then paste it into the username field

Next copy and paste your password:
__________________________

Golden Vortex Device: Using Magnetic Spin

The world’s most advanced personal energy devices
by Nick Nelson

Utilizing a magnet’s “spin” properties rather than it’s “strength” has led to the creation of some phenomenal personal energy access devices that are powered by Golden Vortex Technology™.
Golden Vortex™ (GV) devices are powered by our exclusive nature-based technology that was made possible after 40 years of advanced magnet and vortex research.
Nick Nelson, the inventor of the Golden Vortex™ technology and devices was published in the Journal of New Energy in 2001 after he delivered a paper on magnetic spin domains at the INE Symposium for New Energy conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. Discovering these domains in magnets and learning how to configure and set them to the natural life supporting spin sequences found in natural Vortex locations, Mr. Nelson developed a whole new type of nature-based technology that started with the original Golden Vortex™. These patterns within vortexes are found throughout nature and work in harmony with every living energy system and biofield.
First making them for family and friends Mr. Nelson was soon receiving some phenomenal feedback with many of the same reported benefits experienced at some of the world’s most well known Vortex locations, such as freeing up static energy blockages in the body, providing quick pain relief, access to more energy and optimum health.
Golden Vortex™ devices started receiving a lot of international attention when Dan Shaw demonstrated one on the History Channel’s Brad Meltzer’s Decoded show in 2012, (Season 2, Episode 13) displaying the device’s unique “shrink and grow” effect. It can be a bit much for some to wrap their minds around, but if you take a trip to the Montana Vortex you will see a sign over the door in the back of the gift shop that reads “Management Is Not Responsible For World View Changes”. There is a reason why that sign is there and it is the same reason why it has been chosen here as a disclaimer. If you go in with an open mind you will likely see and experience things you may have never imagined were even possible. The same can be said for Golden Vortex™ devices.
Most users report that when wearing or holding their Golden Vortex™ device to their body they experience similar benefits in terms of increased energy, circulation, easier breathing, as well as the level of clarity and focus that many experience around these Vortex locations. Also commonly reported by wearers of Golden Vortex™ devices is pain relief and reduced inflammation, quicker healing times and better digestion. Many also use them with their drinking water, (as well as water for their pets and plants) by holding the flat unlettered side of the device up to the glass, bottle, bowl or container when filling. For gardening and greenhouses this is done by holding the flat side of the device to the garden hose when the water is running.

Golden Vortex™ devices are being worn by:

  • World top athletes in multiple professional sports. (Active and retired)
  • Doctors, nurses and health care practitioners, EMTs/Paramedics
  • Active and retired military and police officers
  • Martial artists, stuntmen & stuntwomen, American Ninja Warrior finalists
  • Yoga Teachers, Reiki and Qigong practitioners, Strength Coaches
  • Rock stars, singers, musicians, big screen superheroes and Oscar winning and nominated actors
  • CEOs, secretaries, office workers, farmers, laborers, life coaches, teachers and many others from nearly every other walk of life.
We do not pay for endorsements or testimonials but if you would like to take a minute or 2 to share your feedback, we really appreciate it. 60 Day Money Back Guarantee.

DISCLAIMER: These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. We do not make any medical claims for Golden Vortex™ products. These are magnetic devices sold for personal use and research only. It is not recommended to use magnetic devices if you are using a Pace-Maker, Defibrillator etc. Magnets can erase video, music, credit/debit card magnetic strip information and computer data. The magnets we use are very small and we have never heard a case of this happening with our devices but to be on the side of caution we do not recommend holding magnets of any type to your credit cards or memory cards/sticks etc.

The Glastonbury Zodiac: Key to the Mysteries of Britain

By Mary Caine.
"Was it these mysterious proto-Phoenicians who stored the seeds of Atlantean wisdom when their primaeval centres were submerged, sowing them anew in after ages not only in Neolithic Britain (remembered as the source of these ideas), but all along the Mediterranean shore as far as Troy and even Sumeria? Astronomical stone circles line this route from Britain to Persia -- sure sign of a star-gazing people with that most essential tool of civilisation, a calendar."

Choosing a website name
By DanShaw.com

Your website, or domain name, is vital to the success of your business. How do you choose the most effective name possible? Here are the rules I go by. You must weigh and balance all the rules, since there are always exceptions and trade-offs.

Your website name becomes your business name.
Never write or say your business name without adding the “.com”. Reinforce the website address at every opportunity. If you have a storefront, your .com address should be on the sign outside the shop.

Your web address is your own .com.

“.com” is the default type of domain name. If you get a “.biz” or “.info” or some other type of extension, people will forget and go to the .com first, and you will lose traffic. Even if you get a .org or .net, you will still need to get the “.com”, too.

Get your legal name as your domain name.
For example, DanShaw.com. If your name has already been taken, get it now even if you are not planning on using it right now. Better yet, put up a page with your contact information. Many people use the web instead of opening up a phonebook, and many people don’t even a have land-line listed in a local phone directory. Make it easy for people to contact you. You legal-name-as-domain name may be too broad for any single business, but works great if you have numerous divergent businesses and interests.

Choose a name you don’t have to spell

You (and hopefully many other people!) will be repeating your domain name many thousands of times. Choose one you don’t have to spell out.

Bad: Auctions4u.com
Bad: ClairesTyes
Bad: Gonzalos (“What did you say?” Gonsales? Gonzales?”)
Good: Auctionsforyou.com
Good: BobsTies

Choose a short name
Choose a name which is about 15 characters or less. Some people will type your name directly into their browser address bar (not to mention how many times you’ll type and write your name). Shorter names are not only easier to say and spell, they’re less subject to typos.

Choose a name without any dashes or underscores.
People are likely to forget dashes or underscores.

Bad: Collectible-Coins.com
Good: CollectibleCoins.com

Choose a name that is memorable.

You don’t want people forgetting it!

Bad: TheGoodPlumber.com (“the” is forgettable)
Good: BestDamnPlumber.com (humor is memorable)

Choose a name that describes what you do.

In most cases, choose the most descriptive name you can. Consider that your website address can be all you need. If you need more, you’ll need more room to print it, you’ll have to print it smaller, and people will need more time to read and understand it. Choose a name that doesn’t need a tag line.

Bad: PinkPanda.com: Exotic Pets
Good: exoticpets.com

Choose a new that will make people want to look you up.
For example, if you saw the name JohnDoe.com on the back of a bus, would you go seek it out? No.

Bad: JohnDoe.com (Unless your name is a household word.)
Good: DonaldTrump.com (Redirects to Trump.com.)
Good: VideosForDancers.com (“I’m a dancer who wants video, I’ll look that up.”)

Differentiate your business.
Choose a name that describes your unique offering, your ‘radical monopoly’.

Bad: RalphsAutoParts.com
Good: AntiqueFordAutoParts.com

Choose a name that is broad enough.

Bad: ValleyAvenueHaircuts.com (what if you move to another location? What if you want to sell some other product or service besides?)
Good: VelvetSalon.com

Choose a name that is narrow enough to help your search engine standings.

The more narrow your market, the easier it will be to differentiate yourself, promote just a few keywords, get ranked highly in the search engines, and identify and reach your target audience.

Bad: RalphsAutoParts.com
Good: AntiqueFordAutoParts.com

Choose a name that people will search for.
Will people type your company name into Google? Only if they already know about your company. If you expect to get business from people through search results, do your best to put keywords into your domain name.

Bad: VelvetCloud.com
Good: VelvetShoes.com

Always Use Intercaps
Intercaps make your name more readable. Intercaps help avoid conflation of terms.

Bad: danshaw.com
Good: DanShaw.com

Avoid word conflation.

Since there are no spaces in domain name, choose words that won’t be mis-read.

Bad: whorepresents.com
Bad: whoistheiragent.com (tendency to be read, “who is the iragent?”)
Good: talktomyagent.com

“www.” is not part of your domain name.

All websites are “www.”, It’s the default, there’s no need to type it into the browser address bar. It’s hard to say. It unnecessarily takes up space in print.

Brainstorming tips.
Write down all the possible relevant words and phrases you can think of and recombine them. For example, if you’re in the auction business, high bid, higher, highest, bid, winning, auction, block, gavel, lot, going once, highbid, bidhigh, winningauction, winning bidder, etc.

Should you get the singular or the plural, or both?

For example, should you get videosfordancers.com, or videofordancers.com? That depends of meaning, but also on how the name sounds, and how people will remember it. You don’t want to have to re-emphasize, to try to get people to remember, for example, “that’s ‘shows’ with an ‘S’.” You may want or need to get both if they’re both available.

Bad: spotpetfoods.com
Good: spotpetfood.com

Check to see if a domain name is available only through internic.net!
You can check to see if a domain name is currently hosted simply by typing in to the address bar in your browser.

However, to see if a domain names is already registered, check your domain name only at:
http://www.internic.net/whois.html
Do not check for domains at any other site! Checking for names at unknown sites may mean someone is watching.

Domain names registration is cheap.
Domain names are registered by the year through many resellers. One of the largest registrars is godaddy.com, though they have had some involvement in promoting porn. As of this writing, domains are about $10 per year. So if you think of a better name, you can always switch.

Take the time to find just the perfect domain name.

When you’re figured it out, you’ll know it’s perfect. You won’t have to call me to ask me what I think of the name.

Register the name for at least two years.

It’s likely that domain names that are registered for just one year are deprecated by the search leader, Google.com.

Parking domain names.
You may get any number of domain names and have them all point to the same website. This is called parking. For example, if you qualify for a .org, you will still want to get the .com name, and redirect the .com to point to the .org address.
